August 2009 CULTURE + SHOP + GALLERY NEWS
for culture vultures...
Dear Carmen,

Slack Stock Take Sale - Ends Wednesday 12th August

It took us ages to count, and we're not doing that again in a hurry! So now that it's finally done, we've been clearing it out. If we left it any longer we'd have to call it a spring clearing. We have all manner of local and international designer tid-bits stashed around the place looking for a good homes. It's a jumble in here!

You can even have 10% off current Third Draw Down Limited Edition Tea Towels and Pillowcases.

We are pleased to extend to our loyal subscribers a free gift with purchase over $50. Tell us how much you love us and we'll shower you with small tokens of our (hopefully) reciprocated affection.

Cheers,
Carmen.

Andrei Ivanof
More Fucking FrangipanisWe welcome in the midst of the sale chaos a selection of works by style shape shifter Andrei Ivanof.

We've been a fan of Andrei's diverse output, keen intellect and dark humour for some time. You may have seen one of his frangipani designs feature in our advertising around the place, under the slogan FRANGIPANI FREE ZONE.

Here's one for the grown ups we didn't print in the local media.

Picture: More F*****G Frangipanis by Andrei Ivanof

"I paint, design & create art out of necessity more than anything else. There are times when I just have to do a piece or work on a painting, well aware how inaccessible and virtually unmerchantable it may be.
I'm not overly interested in the designer whims of what is fashionably "Hip" or not in contemporary art today.
My creative response is a reaction to the thoughts and ideas that arise from my levels of consciousness, some profoundly eminent, others intangible, obscure and or metaphysical."

So There!
so, what else is new?

Hand Made Mood Enhancers - Conscious Kitsch by Amanda Margaret Designs
Arista LampAmanda has always been interested in graphic design,  and photography. Well travelled and easily inspired, her preference is for third world countries that reinforce her philosophy of indulging in the simple pleasures that living life simply can bring.

Amanda has accumulated diverse skills and interests on her adventures, including traditional jewellery making techniques from Tibetan craftsman.

Her current exploration utilising lamps and recycled materials enable her to bring all her passions to bear. Amanda is committed to a vision of the future where contemporary jetsom is continually being recycled and reinvented into new forms. Where character and history take precedence over the thrill of  shiny and new.  Her pieces are practical yet nostalgic, acknowledging the source and revealing its hidden potential. Coaxing old treasures back out in to the light.

One Peso - Things Funky Librarians Would Like
One PesoBorn and bred Nambour designer Rhiannon O'Dell brings to bare a range of kooky influences in her selection of hand made brooches.

With a background in clothing design, she is  a self confessed "hoarder of crap" heavily influenced by 80's fashion and 50's kitsch. Well travelled and free spirited this visually oriented treasure creates for the pleasure of others. The collection features lovingly made felt brooches incorporating images of yesteryear, when children were silent and obedient, and analogue sound in all its crackly warmth ruled the airwaves.

Ooh There's Something Fun On
Tanya BattWe don't usually plug events, but this one's a bit a different. One of our favourite eateries will host internationally acclaimed author and story teller Tanya Batt. One night only of story telling (for adults) and fine food in very limited numbers.

Join us at the newly refurbished QOM on Thursday 3rd Sept, for an evening of what I'm sure will be the most interesting anecdotes I've heard over dinner in ages.

Tanya will also be conducting a workshop & book signing during her brief visit. For bookings and enquiries contact lovely Peregian local Ally on  0404 866 698.

Tara Lee Calls Eumundi Home
Tara LeeGrowing up on a farm in mid-west America, Tara  spent much of her time in the creek, pond or pasture, eventually finding a career in environmental studies,  travelling throughout America's national parks. It was here she began stitching seed beads together using Native American techniques, and  began her love affair with handy crafts.

Tara now calls Eumundi home, where a chance purchase of a sewing machine at a rural auction further fanned the flame, which now burns brightly as Tara Lee Textiles. The lovingly crafted collection features one off hand bags, pencil rolls, pouches and brooches (pictured).

"Tara Lee Textiles is a range of home wares, accessories, and one off framed art pieces. I use the best fabrics available as well as glass antique buttons. The wool felt pieces are hand dyed and felted by me.  I love putting colors together making it fresh and uplifting."
